Screenshot tests are awesome. They catch regressions by yelling at you when a padding value changes unexpectedly, drifting from the pixel perfect layout you'd originally built. At Square, we're doing a lot more with them: they've become our primary feedback loop for building UI. Instead of rebuilding the app and navigating to a screen to verify our layouts, we render them as screenshots and look directly at the generated images. By tightening our loop, we're able to experiment more. Static screenshots have a gap though: anything that moves. We've been closing it with interactive screenshot tests that still run on the JVM: fake touch events drive the UI, and the whole interaction gets captured as a lossless APNG, so every frame is still diffable against a golden one. This turns out to matter a lot for AI coding agents that can now use the generated images as their own verification loop instead of awkwardly poking at an emulator.
