Session
Swapping Engines Mid-Flight: Engineering an HTTP/3 Migration on Android
HTTP3 promises faster, more resilient networking but introducing it into an existing Android application is less about flipping a switch and more about changing the engine while the plane is already flying.
In this session, we'll walk through the engineering journey of migrating an existing Android networking stack from OkHttp to Cronet, enabling HTTP3/QUIC while minimizing changes to the application layer.
Focus points of talk will be
- Deep dive in protocol details of HTTP3 and HTTP2, discussing advantages and tradeoffs.
- Introduction to Cronet which enables HTTP3 on Android.
- Bridging Cronet to OkHttp by refactoring Interceptors, Authenticator and Cache layer, while keeping OkHttp as fallback.
- Rollout strategy of HTTP3 across all platforms (Android, iOS, Web)
- Measuring connection and request level metrics to understand improvements.
Attendees will leave with a practical mental model for HTTP/3 and a migration playbook they can apply to their own Android applications.
